Grand Seiko has always argued that a watch can be a vessel for craft, and its latest limited edition makes that case in indigo. The SBGW325 “Arabic Blue,” part of the brand’s Elegance Collection, is a manual-winding dress watch that pulls together Japanese dyeing tradition, hand-finishing, and a nod to Grand Seiko’s own history, all in a compact 37.3mm case.
The Grand Seiko SBGW325 "Arabic Blue" is a 600-piece limited-edition manual-winding dress watch in a 37.3mm steel case, with a navy indigo-inspired dial, revived Arabic numerals, and the hand-wound 9S64 caliber (72-hour power reserve); it comes with a hon-ai indigo-dyed crocodile strap and is priced at $5,800.
The reference point is 2001, the year Grand Seiko introduced its first manually wound 9S movement in a watch called the SBGW003. The new Arabic Blue revives that watch’s distinctive Arabic numerals, this time set against a deep navy dial inspired by Japan’s centuries-old indigo-dyeing tradition. Boldly raised indexes give the dial a sense of depth, and the theme carries onto the strap: a crocodile band hand-dyed using hon-ai, the traditional true-indigo method.
The case is where Grand Seiko’s hand-finishing shows. Its round, gentle form and subtly sloped lugs are worked to the brand’s signature Zaratsu mirror finish, the distortion-free polishing technique that has become Grand Seiko’s calling card. At 37.3mm across and 11.7mm thick, it’s an easy, classical size, and a box-shaped sapphire crystal reinforces the vintage-leaning feel.
Inside is the hand-wound 9S64 caliber, with 24 jewels, a 72-hour power reserve, and a rated accuracy of +5 to −3 seconds a day. Grand Seiko notes a characteristic touch of its manual movements: the torque diminishes gradually as the mainspring unwinds, which helps keep the rate stable across the power reserve. The movement is on display through a sapphire caseback that also carries each piece’s edition number, since the Arabic Blue is limited to 600 worldwide.
The watch ships with two straps, the indigo-dyed crocodile and an interchangeable white pebbled-leather band with a soft, grained texture, both sourced from tanneries certified by the Leather Working Group. And at $5,800, the SBGW325 lands where Grand Seiko is strongest: handcraft and heritage that punch well above the price.
