If you ever have the chance to meet Michel Parmigiani, you’ll be struck by his soft-spoken nature. Yet behind this quiet demeanor lies a watchmaker of unparalleled skill and impeccable credentials. Michel began his career as a watch restorer in the 1970s, and as word of his extraordinary talent spread, industry titans such as Breguet, Cartier, Patek Philippe, and Vacheron Constantin sought him out to restore their most precious antique pieces. However, it was a fateful encounter with the Sandoz family, whose fortune is intertwined with Novartis, that would change his destiny. With their backing, Michel founded the eponymous Parmigiani Fleurier brand.

Taking its name from Fleurier, the town where he honed his craft and where the brand continues to meticulously create its watches today, Parmigiani Fleurier has become a crucible for horological mastery. It served as the training ground for future luminaries like Kari Voutilainen, Stephan Sarpaneva, and Raúl Pagès.

The manufacture has also played a vital role in the economic development of its namesake town. Michel was instrumental in persuading the Scheufele family to relocate the production of Chopard and Ferdinand Berthoud watches to Fleurier and the Val-de-Travers region, further solidifying the area’s reputation as a watchmaking hub.

To date, the brand has proudly secured four Grand Prix d’Horlogerie de Genève awards: the Tonda Chronor Anniversaire won the Chronograph Prize in 2017; the Toric Hémisphères Rétrograde took home the Travel Time Watch Prize the same year; the Hijri Perpetual Calendar earned the Innovation Prize in 2020; and the Tonda PF Automatic 36mm clinched the Ladies’ Watch Prize in 2022.

Parmigiani Fleurier’s success is also rooted in its remarkable consolidation of esteemed suppliers: Les Artisans Boîtiers crafts its cases, Vaucher supplies its movements, Atokalpa and Elwin provide high-precision components, and Quadrance et Habillage produces its dials. This network of excellence ensures the brand’s commitment to quality at every level.

Yet, the appointment of Guido Terreni as CEO in 2021 marked the most pivotal moment in the brand’s recent history. Having led Bulgari’s watch division to fame with award-winning models such as the Octo Finissimo, Terreni brought his visionary leadership to Parmigiani Fleurier—a brand that, until then, had remained somewhat overlooked.

Before Terreni’s arrival, Parmigiani Fleurier’s watches were scattered across multiple collections, like Bugatti, Ionica, Kalpa, Ovale, Tonda, and Toric, with no cohesive identity. Fortunately, Terreni is not only a shrewd businessman but also a designer at heart. By consolidating the brand’s offerings under the revitalized Tonda PF banner, he helped Parmigiani Fleurier find a distinctive design language that had eluded it for decades.

The brand’s history can be neatly divided into two eras: before and after the unveiling of 2021’s Tonda PF Micro-Rotor. I vividly recall collectors worldwide swooning over this enchanting model, much like devoted fans at a packed, sweltering Beatles concert.

Today, many collectors rank the Tonda PF among their favorite dress watches, even if they are unaware of the brand’s brief but remarkable history, which I’ve just shared with you.

Parmigiani Fleurier’s immense savoir-faire and impeccable taste extend to its latest creations, such as the 40mm Tonda PF Skeleton Slate Green, limited to just 50 pieces. The intricate grain d’orge barleycorn hand-finishing pattern, which has become a vaunted signature trait of Parmigiani Fleurier, graces recent releases like the Tonda PF Chronograph No Date in Mineral Blue, the Tonda PF GMT Rattrapante Verzasca, and the 20-piece limited edition Tonda PF Micro-Rotor in Rose Dragée.

If you’re unfamiliar with the rattrapante complication, it’s a split-second chronograph function revived by Parmigiani Fleurier that allows the wearer to “jump” the second time zone hour hand at the push of a button.

The brand recently reimagined its 42.5mm Tonda PF Chronograph in Ultra-Cermet—a durable and proprietary composite material blending ceramic and metal. Just last week, Parmigiani Fleurier led us to fall head over heels once again when it unveiled the Tonda PF Sport Chronograph in Rose Gold Sandstone.
