The House of Cartier shared its sparkle and shine at the moving ceremony of the 9th Cartier Women’s Initiative Awards in Deauville, France last Thursday night when it rewarded seven outstanding ladies representing six start-up companies from six regions around the globe.

What do the laureates of the Cartier Women’s Initiative Awards and the Cartier Paris Nouvelle Vague jewelry collection have in common?

The laureates from Latin America, North America, Europe, MENA (Middle East North Africa), Sub-Saharan Africa and Asia-Pacific received full honours from the reputed haute jeweler and watchmaker for their entrepreneurial activities and business plans, following an intense competition from over 1700 applications.

Created in 2006 by Cartier and the Woman’s Forum that takes place in Deauville in October, in association with the international business school INSEAD and the global management consulting firm McKinsey Co., the Cartier Women’s Initiative Awards attribute each project with a US$20,000 grant, coaching for one year, networking opportunities, media visibility, and an exclusive trophy designed by Cartier.

How does it work? Applications are made from November to February, pre-selections start in March, and finalists are announced in June-July, then coached until October in preparation for Round 2, when business plans are submitted to the jury. To be considered, the project must be a creative, for-profit business, have from 1 to 3 years of operations, and be led by a woman from any country, nationality and industry.

The winners this year are:

Ciara Clancy from Ireland for her work to deliver sound wave treatment for people with Parkinson’s disease via a mobile application

Komal Dadlani from Chile for developing web and mobile technologies to turn smartphones and tablets into science instruments

Co-founders Hannah Chou Momo Huang from Taiwan, who hire people with disabilities to collect and share information about accessible restaurants via mobile technology.

Mouna Abbassy in Dubai, originally from Morocco, for her company that makes cosmetics of Argan oil and other rare natural ingredients imported from Morocco

Alexandra Greenhill from Canada for her web and mobile service to help families find childcare, home care and elder care

Chinwe Ohajuruka from Nigeria, for her company that engineers and builds affordable ecological houses that are energy and resource-efficient

The 2015 Cartier “Paris Nouvelle Vague” jewelry Collection is inspired by “free-thinking muses” who identify with the creative energy and enchanting beauty of Paris. Here we pay tribute to the laureates by associating their dedication and brilliance with the beautiful pieces of jewelry from the new Collection.
